I payed a visit to Europe's largest art supply store yesterday. Felt like a kid in a candy store! Lots of brands and good prices (more affordable than any store I've visited in Sweden). One of the things I bought was a daylight bulb. I should have bought it earlier, because the whole winter has been a struggle painting without proper natural lighting. Waking up in the morning, the things I've painted the night before has had the wrong color due to working in the light of "bad" light bulbs.

I dropped off the paintings at the gallery for curating a couple of hours ago, but really, you don't need to go to a gallery or museum to see quality art here. Enjoy the pictures! I also found a Ronaldo look-a-like: I got to see my Morpho! We even saw one which was crawling out of his coocoon, how amazing!! The wings are very sticky when they come out and it takes a lot of effort to spread their wings for the first time. It becomes easier when they dry. Then we saw when the newborn butterflies made their first attempts to fly. Some butterflies were very livly and came and sat on you! That together with seeing the newborns were definitely the highlights. I am really tired and I am going to bed soon, so Ill be posting more butterflies tomorrow. The butterfly metaphor is so strong: That something as small and ugly as an insect lying in a cocoon can make such a transformation and turn into one of these wonderful creatures! A bit tired today as I mentioned above...:) I was kind of chocked how good the butterflies looked on camera, they definitely are little posing artworks by nature!
I've been on the go since I came last evening, but I'll give you a little update :) Finding my way to the place where I was going to stay I got help from a very nice young Greek, he walked me all the way; helpful people over here=great start! Then I met up with an old classmate and we went to her friend's artist studio to hang out and drink some wine. It was a very nice workplace for painting, with 5 meter to the roof and daylight entering from above (I'll put that on my wish list). After midnight we went to Shoreditch House to have some late dinner (nice food and fast service, but someone in your company has to be a member to enter). Today we've been to the National History Museum to watch the butterfly exhibition. I have some gorgeous photos from there and I'll post some of them later. Iv'e also had the chance to stroll down Brick Lane, and it is full of small charming shops, curry places and graffiti. "From caring comes courage" I've seen a lot more really good graffiti, some you just want to rip off the wall and bring with you home.
The P's for packing; passport, payment, pills and 'pickets' (tickets). Next time I say hi will be from the Bricklane district, the area in London with the highest number of artists per square meter! I like this frame a lot, it makes the red and the white pop! I picked it up today and now I've carefully covered it in bubble plastic to prevent damage during shipping.
What else have I been up to lately? I've prepared a new canvas amongst other stuff. My idea is to stop doing it myself and to buy them ready made, but I had this one lying around. I put the four pieces together by hand, then I measured the distance of the diagonals to make sure it was even (otherwise it might be hard framing it later). Then I made some careful readjustments with the hammer. Next thing I measured and cut the canvas... ...and stiched it to the frame. The length of this canvas is about 70cm, and that is about what I can handle by myself. I need help to stretch larger ones. I've started painting on it too, to be continued..:) I've had some bad luck with the framing of the last two paintings. When I turned them in, there wasn't enough frame left of the one I wanted, so they were going to order some more of it. Unfortunately it didn't arrive in time. So today I've been choosing new frames. After some testing I decided on a black one. The one I had ordered was in silver, but this is going to look good too, maybe even better (have to see it from the positive side :)). I'll stop by to pick them up tomorrow. |
