Life - reproduction, the union between the feminine and the masculine. How lucky we are to be alive! Or is it something else than a coincidence and pure luck?
I was talking about this theme with a friend and her suggestion was to paint a pair of dices. Great idea and I actually started to sketch on it when I started to think about this instead.

First I started to outline the butterfly with a pencil. (This is actually another butterfly, I forgot to take a pic of the other one.) Next step is the first layer. I've used acrylics. Here I've applied the first layer of oil of the background. For the details I've used a very thin brush. Here I've applied oil on the butterfly too. In total I've applied 1 layer of acrylics and 1,5 layers of oil. What I mean by that is that it wasn't necessary to cover the whole painting in oil two times. I just needed to make some alterations, color adjustments, highlights and shadows at certain places. This butterfly is actually turned towards you. Do you see his stomach? The green background is one of my favorites and I've used the same technique before. I love that blurry feeling <3
Now I'm off to my Spanish lessons. Happy painting everyone! :) I thought last week's theme was hard, but I have to think about this one for a while...
Do you believe in destiny or in random coincidences? Most of the time I believe in the second alternative (but sometimes I doubt my own believes). There's no grand plan. Normally we prescribe a meaning to things and events after they've happened. Do you think it is destiny that you happened to meet that guy in the corner of the street? Yeah right, just think of all the trillion times you've just missed each other. Of course you'll bump into that person sooner or later. Just common sense :) Kind of funny that I found this one now. Another charity project with Christmas postcards :) anyone can join! I've benen working the whole weekend on the charity project in Spain and I finally made a decision about my contribution. I was thinking about having a travelling theme. Then I went back to my dear lips. Since it is about charity I don't think the theme about kisses and love ain't that bad either :) I'm going to send these two postcards which I made months ago (they are the right size because I was actually thinking about the project while I was doing them). I've also made a completely new one which is drying right now.
Earlier I've sent acrylic prints to Postales desde el Limbo, but this year it is going to be originals painted with aquarelle. It is nice to step outside my comfort zone (oil painting) once in a while. Also, when I posted one of these on Instagram it got more likes than some of my oils (!). In this case it is important that the artworks appeal to the broader mass because the main goal is to sell and make money for the charity. Something I really want to see in London is the new Damien Hirst pill exhibition. Take a couple of minutes and watch the video below. The exhibition makes clear references to pop art and Warhol with the pill silk prints. Apart from the prints, you'll see installations and giant pill boxes which create that Alice in Wonderland feel to the whole experience. Pills are associated with illnesses, death, but is also used as a replacement of spirituality since we're getting further away from religion in society today. Pharmaceuticals is such an industry. Take a moment and think about what pills you take, how often and why. Are all of them really necessary? I know I've been taking some questionable pills (no illegal ones though). It's been really easy to get prescriptions on for example antibiotics, maybe not in Sweden but abroad. More information about the exhibition here.
I had this frame lying around so I decided to use it for "my" lips. Now you get a sense of the size of it. Not that big :) but I love the impact when you use it together with a passepartout and a black frame. Last year in July when I was going on vacation all the stress I had been building up to that point just burst while flying from Madrid and Ibiza (I've written about it before). This really nice pilot who was flying stand-by took such good care of me and we became friends. In October last year I went to visit him and some other friends in Spain :) First thing that happened after landing and eating dinner was that the car broke down...we were sitting on the high road for about an hour!! Didn't feel safe at all since it was in the middle of the night and the traffic was horrible...The car wasn't even a year old so I can't believe it happened in the first place! Well everything got solved and we could pick up the care a couple of days later and then it worked fine. I even dared to drive the streets of Barcelona myself, which is crazy and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The October weather was amazing! Beach weather so to speak :) My group of friends went to this relaxed hamburgerplace called Maka Maka where you can paint on the forks and knifes to create little art works. So much fun! We payed this museum a visit. It's crazy good! You can see so many different styles from Picasso in this museum. From realism to what he is known for now.
Next year, it is the 50th anniversary of the Picasso sculpture in my home town. I'm excited to see what they plan for the celebration. This week's Thursday theme is hosted by Sara Woodrow, and the theme is pink. She's done this really wonderful illustration for the pink ribbon to help fight cancer. My contribution to the challenge is a pair of hot pink lips. It's an oil on paper, a very small one. This is how horrible it looked at first. The trick is not to give up and to apply some dark and some light to create contrasts. Color scheme: Red, yellow, white and blue. Then I cheated a little bit and added some already mixed up black for the shading.
